MICK JAGGER - Haircut Suspensions

Today in 1964 a school in Coventry England suspended 11 boys for having Mick Jagger haircuts. REALLY?! What a chapter for Mick to put in his book hey? What a time that must have been to be in England when The Rolling Stones and the Beatles were hitting the airwaves with their tunez! So lets get back to the suspension thang...Can't you just hear it now?....There are 11 60+ year-old men out there likely still telling the story: "yep - I got suspended for having a Mick Jagger haircut"..LOL

Mick Jagger has been a rocker for over 50 years and is still going strong! Amazing really.  I would like to say that I spend a small fortune on his Rolling Stones Farewell Concert ticket (the farewell concert to years before this last farewell concert a couple of years ago - hmmm - come on! Stones and Cher - farewell means buh-BYE! for future reference. lol)
Sir Michael Philip "Mick" Jagger (born 26 July 1943) - Mick was knighted in 1993 and blew the doors off of his fans and dignitaries around the world. Fans couldn't believe he accepted as it was in complete contradiction of his "anti-establishment stance" and the other folks that are higher on the ladders than the rest of us were surprised because Mick had no record of charitable work or public service. One thing I would also like to add is that Mick was not present at the Queens' 50th Anniversary on the Throne celebration at Buckingham Palace - he is indeed one bad-ass! I giggled at this quote by Charlie Watts form his book 'According to the Rolling Stone': "Anybody else would be lynched: 18 wives and 20 children and he's knighted, fantastic!"

As I was surfing the wonderful Iconic Mick Jagger I came across something that I would have bet against as existing and that is Mick Jagger singing Country Music! This song is on his solo album from 1993.  Too funny - he's not bad either. Here it is, enjoy:

DEEP PURPLE - Smoke On The Water

Today in 1973 Deep Purple's single "Smoke On The Water" was released to radio. Talk about one of the most notorious guitar intro's ever! This song is listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazines 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and also is listed in Q Magazine as number 12 of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

The lyrics of the song tells a true story: on December 7, 1971, Deep Purple had set up camp at Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a concert featuring Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention was held in the casino's
theater; during the concert a fire broke out (said to be caused by a Swiss fan shooting a flare gun in the ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line) that eventually destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass player Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake. The "funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience to escape the fire.(This excerpt is from Wikipidia)

Look what I found! LOL - Now who would have thunk that Deep Purple would sound good singing a Beatles tune? This video cracks me up! I do have to admit that I am not a big Deep Purple fan, but now if they played more tunez like this one I am sure I would listen to them more:

THE HOLLIES - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

Today in 1969 The Hollies recorded 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" with Mr. Piano himself: Elton John. The song was written and recorded in 1969 by Kelly Gordon. That same year the Hollies released the song and it hit No. 7 on the U.S Charts and No. 3 on the UK Charts. The Bands name history is exactly what it implies - they named themselves after Buddy Holly. The Hollies were best known for their harmony vocals.

The next year, Neil Diamond recorded and released the song as well. Neil Diamonds version went to No. 20 the Charts. I really can't decide which version I prefer. Here is Neils - which one do you prefer? Please enter a comment below at the end of this Blog. (Even if you are shy - that is okay - I have set up the comments so that you may provide feedback anonymously!! - I truly would love to hear your feedback folks.) The Hollies version and Neil Diamonds version are so very different. In my humble opinion - Neils version has more meaning because it has been slowed down - what do you think?:

The Hollies are one of the few British Pop groups that have not broken up as a Band and continue to play today. I know how I feel about My Boyz after only a couple of years, I can't even imagine the love in that group after 4 decades! How kewl is that hey that they are still touring and shakin their stuff on stage? The Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

My personal fave of the Hollies is Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.  I used to think for years that it was CCR that was singing it! Smokin tune in my opinion and a very rare tune for the Hollies as well as there are no 3-part harmonies as per 99% of their material AND claim to fame foundation.

AGE WAS NOT KIND TO THESE BOYZ!

Today in never-never land I merely going to share an interesting email I received. I just can't resist in sharing this with you as I was somewhat shocked and at times horrified by what I was looking at. Now I know that father time is unstoppable, however when looking at these pictures I do now take more care and consideration as to how fast I would like Father Time knocking on my forehead! lol  The following pictures are an illustration of how these stars looked and then how they aged. It is blatant in cases that Father Time was a little pissed or something! lol All in fun when it comes to the big stars right? I do not intend to offend anyone -  I am merely sharing an email that I received that made me giggle and heed renewed focus on the importance of taking care of myself through this musical journey! lol

Michael Philip Jagger, The Rolling Stones

Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones-

Steven Tyler, Aerosmith

Johnny Rotten,Sex Pistols

Rod Stewart

This is a fun Blog day on this Holiday Monday, so this Blog is just simple poking fun at some of the great voices of our time. I would like to add that I think it is amazing that all of these guyz are still rockin' it out! This will be something that we talk about for generations to come I bet! The new music is very diverse and short-lived; it will be interesting to see who has the longevity of the pioneers of our music!!

I know that this cat is not a Rock Star, but I just couldn't help myself! In saying that, by todays standards he could defintely become a Rock Star if he wanted to - there ARE several genres out there where you don't really have to carry a tune.  He is a Movie Star-Body Builder turned politician - Mr. Universe himself:

THE RASCALS - Groovin

Today in 1967 The Young Rascals hit No. 1 on the US Singles Chart with their song 'Groovin'. The song was an interpretation of a new style of Afro-Cuban with instruments such as a conga, Cuban-based Bass Guitar and a harmonica. The style was a far cry from The Young Rascals groove (pun intended! lol); so much so that Atlantic Records wasn't going to release the song. Well it's a good thing they did, the song hit the charts immediately and went gold in less than a month!

The Young Rascals named themselves after the U.S. TV show - have you ever had the opportunity to view or listen to the show? I listen to the program every now and then on a local radio station (QR770) that plays old radio shows every night from 11pm - 1am.    It was quite funny for its time - so wholesome; we could sure use a little more wholesome today now couldn't we?!?! Just for shitz & giggles - I have inserted a video that features 'Spanky' - the lead character of the program.

When I was looking at the stats on 'Groovin' to write this Blog I came across something that I had never seen before: the song "even" hit No.3 on the Black Billboard Songs Chart". Come on! Black chart? I must have been under a rock or something because it does make sense that the chart existed in consideration of the day and age - it just appals me to no end! Oh man, it is such a good thing I was not a teenager in the 60's I likely would have spent a great deal of my time in the klink as a protester!! The Rascals actually had a reputation for their ratial intolerance resulting in refusing to tour on segregated Bills! YAY! Good on THEM!! They wrote a song as well to express their standpoint:

'Groovin' is included as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and subsequently the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. That didn't take long hey? Oops, did I say that out loud?  'Groovin also received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. As recent as 2010 The Rascals were inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame - atta go boyz!! This is the part where I completely deviate and take you up to 1996. Pato Banton covered 'Groovin' and took it to the top of the UK Charts. YAW-MON! I really dig this version;

THE DRIFTERS - Save the Last Dance For Me

Today in 1960 The Drifters with Ben E King on Lead Vocals recorded 'Save the Last Dance For Me'. The song was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. The song is the basically written from the perspective of Doc Pomus. Doc had Polio and was not able to get around without the use of crutches and his wife was a beautiful Broadway actress and dancer.
The song is telling the beautiful lady to go, have a great time and dance all night if desired; but always come back to me at the end of the evening for the last dance. Awe! I have heard this song a gazillion times and didn't quite get the sentimental value of the lyrics - I will never hear the song again the same way now. 'Save the Last Dance for Me' hit No. 1 on both the U.S. Pop and R&B Charts and also made it to number 2 on the UK Charts. Okay, now so what do you think happened or maybe it was the times, but in the US it hits Pop and R&R and in Canada it hits No. 2 on the COUNTRY charts only. Huh? I find that odd.

'Save the Last Dance For Me' was covered by countless stars. I can't even imagine the royalties that have accumulated! Artists such as The Beatles, Petula Clark, Emmilou Harris, Dolly Parton, The Defranko Family and then of course we must mention in a great way the man who brought this song back to stardom stature in the Millennium; the Great Michael Buble. He won a Much Music award
for this song in 2006. Is there anyone out there that has NOT tapped their toe to a Buble song? He is the epitome of Cross-Over!! Here is Michael's killer Salsa version - love the horns!!:

I must admit that I would have to say that it would be just sick and wrong to mention The Drifters without speaking to my favorite song in their repertoire; Under the Boardwalk.  The night before the studio session when in 1964 the lead singer (they had several) Rudy Lewis died of a suspected heroin overdose. Rudy sang with The Drifters after Ben E King left the group in 1960 to 1964.
Instead of cancelling the Studio Session or attempting to find a new lead vocalist they brought back the original vocalist Johnny Moore. Everything happens for a Reason, I don't think the song would have had the same impact if Rudy would have been singing; there IS a big difference between their two voices.  Here is my Fave Drifters tune - feel free to jump into your nostalgic pants and drift into where you were when you first heard this song (Check out the shirts!!):

THE TREMELOES - Silence is Golden

Today in 1967 The Tremeloes hit No. 1 on the UK Singles chart with 'Silence is Golden'. 'Silence is Golden' was written by Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons band in 1964 and was released as the B side to Rag Doll. Released as the B side - gone are those days hey? Now this is no side! The ninety-nine cent song has NO sides... The Tremeloes sold over a million copies world-wide and also recorded an Italian version.

The Tremoloes originated as Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. Brian was one talented lead singer slash drummer. I tell you what, I have the utmost respect for drummers that can sing! I can't even imagine how on earth they do it!! Try is for yourself. Take your most favorite song, use a table and just use your two hands, don't worry about your feet; get your groove on and now sing your song AND keep that beat. I dare you!..... The Tremeloes were influenced by Buddy Holly and The Crickets and predominately sang their songs. What they did to however is take Buddy's 3-chord licks and turned them into 4 and 5 chord licks. 'Silence Is Golden' was their only chart-topper and I understand why - I really like this song:

In In 1962 Decca Records was on the hunt for a "Beat" group so they held auditions for 2 bands. Both bands were heavily influenced by Buddy Holly and both bands had similar combinations of players and both bands were comprised of every member having very strong lead vocals. The Tremeloes won the Audion and slot to work with Decca and who was that other band?
It was The Beatles! Yeppers that's right folks, these guys beat out the Beatles who; at the end of the day had a tad more than one No. 1 hit in their career.  I have said it several times before, you just never know what the judges are looking for and the outcome is NEVER a reflection of your art when it comes to talent contests or auditions.  The Tremeloes have another song that I adored when I was younger; I am confident that this song didn't make it to the charts only because of the competition at the time of release because it Rocks....what do you think:

Yet another band that is still rocking it out 5 decades later. They went on a world-wide tour in 2006! Crazy hey? I had to laugh when I was looking at their Albums: Greatest Hits, The Greatest Hits, The very Best Hits, The Complete Hits...now that would be milking it hey? Kudo's to The Tremeloes for still givenrrrr!!

KIM CARNES - Bette Davis Eyes

Today in 1981 Kim Carnes reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Charts with her killer tune: 'Bette Davis Eyes'. The song stayed No. 1 for nine weeks and peaked on the UK charts at No. 10.  Kim hit the mother-load with this song winning 2 Grammy's:  Song of the Year and Record of the Year. 'Bette Davis Eyes also hit No. 1 in 31 Countries - talk about being in the right place at the right time.
The song was actually written in 1974 and initially recorded by DeShannon, but it wasn't until Kim added her personal touch to the song that it hit the airways.  Apparently the original version of the song has been described as the chorus having a "beer-barrel polka piano" flavor. LOL Well no wonder the song never went anywhere! lol Kim version took out the piano polka and added the signature synthesizer riff.  Get this! The song was recorded live off the floor in the Studio in ONE TAKE!! This is mind-blowing for those of you that are unfamiliar with the process in a recording studio!!  Kim's has such unique vocals, I dare you to tell me who she sounds like. She has been referred to as the Female Rod Stewart and I would have to agree.  Bette Davis liked the song as well and contacted Kim to thank her for making her "a part of modern times".

Kim Carnes started out as an actress with a notable appearance on the Patty Duke Show. In 1980 Carnes and her hustand Dave Ellingson wrote a complete 12-song concept Album for Kenny Rogers called 'Gideon'.  Kim sang a duet with Kenny on that album called 'Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer'.  The song hit No. 4 on the Pop Charts and No.3 on the Country Charts. Now that is a nice little gig for Kim hey?

THE ROLLING STONES - Satisfaction

Today in 1965 The Rolling Stones recorded 'Satisfaction'. To be perfectly honest with you, I had no idea that the song was older than me! lol 'Satisfaction' was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and it was The Rollling Stones' first No. 1 hit in the U.S. Richards woke up in the middle of the night with the notorius 3-note intro riff and "I can't get no satisfaction" in his head and Jagger wrote the rest of the lyrics.   In consideration of the lyrics and year of release it shouldn't come as a surprise that only the private Radio stations would play the song because of it's sexual innuendo. Oh what at time to be a teen hey?

'Satisfaction' is definitely one of the greatest songs of All time! This is not just me talking either, Rolling Stone magazine put it in the list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and also it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. What is this you ask - I had to Google it: Wikipidia: The National Recording Registry is a list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States."..hmmm, I wonder if Canada has one.... check this out! They still smell like pee here! lol:

(I can't get no) Satisfaction has been covered by numerous bands over the years by Artists such as Diana Ross, Bill Cosby, Weird Al Yankovik, Vanilla Ice and Brittney Spears. Here is an off-the-wall version, now imagine THIS coming out in 1965! They thought the lyrics were risky due to sexual innuendo:

FOUR DECADES PLUS LATER THE BOYZ ARE STILL ROCKING IT OUT! OOOH! To have the budget to put on a show like this! Amazing Stage!! Enjoy:

THE BYRDS - Mr. Tambourine

Today in 1965 The Byrds made their debut on NBC's "Hallabaloo" singing 'Mr. Tambourine Man'. The Byrds recorded Mr. Tambourine Man in 1965; the song was also written and recorded in 1965 by Bob Dylan. Now wouldn't that just tick you off? Hey, here's my new album; but wait - hey the Byrds just recorded my song IN THE SAME YEAR IT WAS RELEASED? I would not be happy about that at all! On the other hand, I am certain that I would not complain about the decades of royalties rollin' in....

I started off today's Blog by mentioning NBC's "Hallabaloo.  I have never heard of the program before and it stands to reason: a-I was not born yet and b-it only stayed on the air for a year. I found this video of the Hallabaloo dancers. Oh my, but we have certainly come a long way in dancing!! lol The music is Batman - enjoy the ride on yesterdays:

'Mr. Tambourine' was a hit on many charts and both Dylan's version and the Byrds' received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. The Byrds took the song to a whole new level and genre - Folk Rock. Ha Ha - sounds like an oxymoron to me. You gotta love those days hey? Music was so fresh and the frontier was vast with regards to 'not been done yet!'. I am told that my music would fall into this category. I recently had a music exec from Universal Records tell me that I am ahead of my time and to keep doing what I am doing. This is quite challenging as it is very difficult to book a show. We are too country for the Rock Bars and we are too Rock for the Country Bars and we are the furthest thing from Folk and Blues - go figure! We shall see what happens once the CD is released though! I have decided to diversify to the situation and it is working; time will tell!  See you out there soon!

LOUIS ARMSTRONG - Hello Dolly

Today in 1964 Louis Armstrong made history as the oldest (62) artist to hit No. 1 on the US charts with the song 'Hello Dolly'. Have you ever seen the Broadway musical Hello Dolly? I strongly recommend it if you have not. Hello Dolly was first performed by Carol Channing in 1964 when she starred in the the original Broadway cast in 1964 at the St. James Theater in New York City.  The song became such an instant hit that Kapp Records released Louis Armstrong's' publishing demo as a commercial single.

Louis Armstrong's recording knocked the Beatles off of the charts at number one in 1964. The amazing this about this was that the Beatles were on a streak and setting a record at the time; they were 14 weeks at No. 1 with three No. 1 hits in a row and also held the top 3 spots at the time. Atta go Louis, but I wonder what the Beatles next song would have been if they would have gone on to four number one hits and the weeks kept tallying. I love this picture - doesn't it just say na-na-na-na-nah! Not that that was Louis' character - just sayin.

Louis Armstrong received a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance Male in 1965 with 'Hello, Dolly!'.  Then in 1969 he sang 'Hello Dolly!' with Barbra Streisand in the Hello, Dolly Movie.

MOTHER'S DAY DEDICATION - Special Netty Mac Tribute

In the name of Muzik Newz Ago2day I am dedicating today's Blog to all Mother's out there.  I am very fortunate to have a Mom that is also one of my best friends. When I was a brat teenage girl I OFTEN just wished my Mom would let up and see me as the grown woman that was! (or in my own mind of course!). In looking back at those times when I was such an abstinent brat that rebelled for not getting EVERYTHING I KNEW I DESERVED (in the name of Womanhood and FREEDOM - lol); I have come to realize that every one of my friends would tell me how lucky I was to have such a kewl Mom.    My reply was often: "are you kidding me? you have NO idea!". LMAO Everyone called my Mom: Mom! She was the friend to everyone and now that I look back, she did treat us as adults and got down to our level of thinking. Otherwise, all of
my friends would not have thought she was so damn cool! Funny, over the years through our trials and tribulations.....my friends STILL say that Darlene Mackenzie is the coolest mom out there. My friends often tell me that they wish that they could have the relationship with their Mom like I do. I am the richest woman in the world and don't have a dime to my name when looking at how fortunate I am to have the Mom that I do! Don't get me wrong, of course it has not always been bliss; quite the opposite when looking through the eyes of that 'teenage bratt!". At the end of the day, I know as the grown woman that I am now, that I am so very luck to have a Mom and Best Friend that supports me in everything that I do and also more important: does not hesitate to give her two cents on what I am not doing or what I could be doing!

The following is a song that I recently wrote. I thought I was writing the song about me and this woman that I have become. I was wrong. The song ended up being a tribute to my Mommy. The reason you ask? Because I am a chip off the old block. I am very self confident. Many misconstrue this as arrogance. I know what I want and do everything in my power to attain my goals and face obstacles and adversity as a challenge as opposed to a road block. My Mom is also a chip off the old block. My Grandmother was one amazing woman of courage and strength and self-worth. This song is about my Grandmother, myself and to the core: Darlene Mackenzie:

I Make It Mine
© Netty Mac 2011

Some call me bold, other's call me arrogant
I don't fit any molds, I always go for what I want
I don't sit back in my chair, waiting on that Silver Platter
My Momma taught me to climb stairs, to get to that place that really matters

I don't get what I don't as for, I'm not afraid to cross any lines
Even when I'm faced with slamming doors
I find an open window and I make it mine
Oh yah, I make it mine!

I am true to me, I don't bend for acceptance
I am wild and free, and my core is persistance
I don't chew on yesterday, no the past won't make my future
And as my Momma would always say, shoot for the moon and strive to be....BETTER

I don't get what I don't as for, I'm not afraid to cross any lines
Even when I'm faced with slamming doors
I find an open window and I make it mine
Oh yah, I make it mine!
Yah, I make it mine!

The picture above is shot of me and my Mommy singing on stage together. Now this is mind-blowing for me. I never knew my Mom could sing; until this past year.  Blew me right out of the water really when she asked me to send her the song because she couldn't get the words down in one of the verses. HUH? I was dumbfounded! Now at my shows, I always ask her to come up and sing with me. AND, when the stars are really aligned, when my sister TammaLee (Brilliant singer-songwriter!) is in the house, she also comes up on stage and we all jam out 'To Feel This Feel" - all three of us. There are no words that I can use to describe to you how I feel when this is happening. Only one: LOVE.

Okay, so enough of the mushy mushy. I went into Youtube to find some videos that would be kewl to put into my blog today. Well, fasten seatbelts...extinguish all cigarette....you are about to go on a ride that I am certain will be most unexpected. LOL LOL LOL

Here is a message from Mr. T . yep, that's right - Mr. T - do you remember him? Well, look at his socks, look at the backup singer moves...just well, go ahead and Laugh out Loud - I sure did:

The following video is a Mother singing about being a mother - BRILLIANT!!
