GENE VINCENT & HIS BLUE CAPS - Be-Bop-A-Lula

Toady (May 4) in 1956 Gene Vincent (Vincent Eugene Craddock) and his group 'His Blue Caps' (not THE Blue Caps - HIS Blue Caps) recorded Be-Bop-A-Lula. Gene was an American singer guitar player that is considered one of the pioneers of the combination of rock and roll and rockabilly.

Gene wanted to spend his life in the U.S. Navy like his father but got into a motorcycle accident in 1955 that left him with a permanent limp and a lifetime of chronic pain. He was then discharged. Oh how that would just be horrible hey? Dream gone AND chronic pain to boot! So what else but logical to form a rockabilly band call Blue Caps. Blue Caps is a Navy term used to reference enlisted sailors.

The Gene Vincet and His Blue Caps tune that I remember when I was a youngin was Pistol Packin Mama. Have you heard it before? LOL Not many folks have heard of Gene Vincent, but you will hear many of the Greats of the 50's & 60's covering his songs. As a matter of fact the reason I even knew of Geme Vincent was listening to the Hoyt Axton version in my Grandma's cassette deck in her truck on Summer holidays. Willie Nelson also covered the song. I don't think that anyone does the song justice regardless of their record sales or notoriety; Gene Vincent kiks it!:

Gene Vincent is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.  His song Be-Bop-A-Lula is ranked No. 102 on Rolling Stone magazines' '500 Greatest Rock and Roll Songs of All Time'. I concur!! If you like rockabilly - this is YOUR NEW FAVE ARTIST!
