NORMAN GREENBAUM - Spirit In The Sky

Today in 1970 Norman Greenbaum hit Number One on the UK charts with "Spirit In The Sky". The song also made it to NO. 1 on the Australian and Canadian charts and #3 on the U.S. Billboard. Sales were in excess of 2 million dollars from when it was recorded in 1969 to 1970.  'Spirit in the Sky' made the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list at No. 333. I would have put this song in the list as well. Who doesn't get a bounce in yer bum when you hear this song?!?!:

Greenbaum wrote the song after watching Porter Wagaoner sing a Gospel tune on TV.  He was not a very religios man, he merely wanted to write a Gospel song because he didn't have one yet. Sounds like me! lol  'Spirit In The Sky' also hit the charts in 1986 (my personal Fave) when the Doctor and the Medics recorded it:

Here is another verson that also went to No. 1 in 2003 by Gareth Gates (Wow - what an odd odd vid!):
